Noises to Not Ignore
When we talk about air conditioning noises, it’s not just for fun. The earlier you notice a problem with your air conditioning system, the faster you can call for repairs and the less damage the problem will do. So, take a good look at the following AC noises and see if any of these apply to you.
- Hissing or Whistling. While many unsuspecting homeowners might think there’s a snake in their system, there’s actually a much simpler solution for a noise like that. Every air conditioner has a line of highly pressurized gas that functions as a refrigerant to move heat out of your home and cool down the interior. A whistling or hissing noise could be a sign that the refrigerant in your system is beginning to leak. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible since refrigerant is integral to the cooling process and your system will start to struggle if it doesn’t have the right amount of refrigerant to run!
- Buzzing. A buzzing air conditioner could be suffering from a few different problems. Buzzing is usually an issue that has to do with electricity, since electricity that has to jump from circuit to circuit tends to make a loud buzzing noise. (This noise is usually pretty easy to pinpoint for homeowners) If your system is suffering from an electrical problem, it needs to be repaired fairly quickly because electrical issues could either lead to a system shutdown or a fire hazard.
- Grinding. A grinding noise is never a good thing, no matter what system it is coming from, (unless we’re talking about a grinder, obviously). Grinding noises that come from your AC usually mean there’s a problem with the compressor or a damaged belt. Belt problems are fairly easy to repair, but compressor problems could easily signify the complete breakdown of your AC system. The compressor is the heart of the unit, and if it’s starting to grind a component down, it’s only a matter of time until your AC stops working.
Do any of these noises sound familiar? If they do, it won’t do any good to wait and let them cause damage to your system. Give our AC specialists a call today to have your air conditioner repaired.
